About 901 Rugby

901 Rugby is a boys rugby club for high school and middle school players, based in Germantown, TN and serving the greater Memphis area — including Collierville, Cordova, and homeschool families. If your son has never touched a rugby ball, he’s in good company: most of our players hadn’t either. No experience needed. Just join us for practice.

Our story

Rugby in Germantown goes back to the early 2000s, when high school rugby began in Tennessee and Germantown Rugby and the Houston Mustangs were formed. Alongside the Mustang Middle Rugby Club, the program competed in the West Tennessee High School and Middle School Rugby Conference under the Tennessee Rugby Association (founded 2001). Our founding coaches — Kevin Roedel, Brooks Williams, and Kevin Wright — played together at Memphis State and with the Memphis Blues Rugby Club, and built the program on a simple promise: no cuts, everyone plays.

What started as a middle school club grew into one of the most successful rugby programs in Tennessee — winning state championships at every level, sending players to the Tennessee Tristar all-star squad and the USA Rugby High School All-American pipeline, and cracking the national Top 50 club rankings. In the early years, Germantown rugby families had to travel to Midtown, Bartlett, or Millington just to host a “home” match; today the club has a true home at 901 Rugby Field at Farmington Park. Now competing as 901 Rugby, the club carries that same tradition forward for the whole 901 area.

What we believe

Rugby challenges every aspect of athletic ability — players run, pass, kick, tackle, and make decisions under pressure — and there is a position for every body type. But the point of 901 Rugby has never been just trophies. The club exists to use rugby as a teaching platform: pride, sound judgment, a strong work ethic, leadership, and teamwork. It’s a sport like no other for building camaraderie among teammates and respect for the opposition — traditions like the post-match social are part of the game. No cuts. Everyone plays. No experience necessary.
